Nonparametric Algorithms for Joint Pricing and Inventory Control with Lost-Sales and Censored Demand

چکیده
We consider the classical joint pricing and inventory control problem with lost-sales and censored demand in which the customer’s response to selling price and the demand distribution are not known a priori, and the only available information for decision-making is the past sales data. Conventional approaches, such as stochastic approximation, online convex optimization, and continuum-armed bandit algorithms, cannot be employed since neither the realized values of the profit function nor its derivatives are known. A major difficulty of this problem lies in the fact that the estimated profit function from observed sales data is multimodal even when the expected profit function is concave. We develop a nonparametric datadriven algorithm that actively integrates exploration and exploitation through carefully designed cycles. The algorithm searches the decision space through a sparse discretization scheme to jointly learn and optimize a multimodal (sampled) profit function, and corrects the estimation biases caused by demand censoring. We show that the algorithm converges to the optimal policy as the planning horizon increases, and obtain the convergence rate of regret. Numerical experiments show that the proposed algorithm performs very well.

Joint pricing, inventory, and preservation decisions for deteriorating items with stochastic demand and promotional efforts
This study models a joint pricing, inventory, and preservation decision-making problem for deteriorating items subject to stochastic demand and promotional effort. The generalized price-dependent stochastic demand, time proportional deterioration, and partial backlogging rates are used to model the inventory system. The objective is to find the optimal pricing, replenishment, and preservation t...
متن کاملClosing the Gap: A Learning Algorithm for the Lost-Sales Inventory System with Lead Times
Introduction The periodic-review inventory control problem with lost-sales and positive lead times is one of the most fundamental yet notoriously difficult problems in the theory of inventory management (see Zipkin (2000)). The model assumes that unmet demand at the end of each period is lost, rather than being backlogged and carried over to the next period. For example, in many retail applicat...
متن کاملA Nonparametric Asymptotic Analysis of Inventory Planning with Censored Demand
We study stochastic inventory planning with lost sales and instantaneous replenishment, where contrary to the classical inventory theory, the knowledge of the demand distribution is not available. Furthermore, we observe only the sales quantity in each period, and lost sales are unobservable, that is, demand data are censored. The manager must make an ordering decision in each period based only...
متن کاملTechnical Note - Optimal Dynamic Joint Inventory-Pricing Control for Multiplicative Demand with Fixed Order Costs and Lost Sales
This note studies the optimal dynamic decision-making problem for a retailer in a price-sensitive, multiplicative demand framework. Our model incorporates lost sales, holding cost, fixed and variable procurement costs, as well as salvage value. We characterize the structure of the retailer’s (discounted) expected profit-maximizing dynamic inventory policy for both finite and infinite selling ho...
متن کاملBounds and Heuristics for Optimal Bayesian Inventory Control with Unobserved Lost Sales
In most retail environments, when inventory runs out, the unmet demand is lost and not observed. The sales data are effectively censored by the inventory level. Factoring this censored data effect into demand estimation and inventory control decision makes the problem difficult to solve. In this paper, we focus on developing bounds and heuristics for this problem. Specifically, we consider a fi...
